Planning overview

How to Plan Zhangye

Zhangye works best as a focused 1-2 day stop on a Gansu or Hexi Corridor route rather than as a city break on its own. Most travelers come for the Danxia landforms, but the city also gives you one of northwest China's more useful temple visits at Dafo Temple and an easy base for mountain-side grottoes at Matisi. Plan it as one urban half-day plus one full landscape day, and use a car or driver for anything beyond the city center.

Best time to visit

Late spring and early autumn are the easiest seasons for most visitors, with dry air, long daylight, and more comfortable temperatures for temple visits and Danxia viewpoints. Summer is workable and often clear, but midday heat is strong; winter brings very cold, dry conditions and can make flights less convenient even though visibility is often good.

Stay in Ganzhou District or near Zhangye West Railway Station if you want the easiest access to both the city sights and Danxia departures.
Do not count on walking long urban stretches: Zhangye's blocks are large, and the best-known sights outside the center need a taxi, DiDi, or pre-booked car.
Keep sunset flexible for Danxia, because the rock colors read best in lower-angle light and look flatter under harsh midday sun.
If you are flying in winter, double-check schedules: Zhangye Ganzhou Airport has domestic service, but some routes are seasonal or less frequent.

Start with the landscape: Zhangye is usually planned around one major Danxia outing rather than around urban sightseeing.

Itineraries for Zhangye

Zhangye Drum Tower in Ganzhou District

The Drum Tower anchors the city center and helps first-time visitors understand where to stay, eat, and start shorter city walks.

1 day

Danxia first, city second

Best for a rail stop or overnight stay. Keep the city portion light and save your best weather window for the landscape.

  1. 1Dafo Temple and the Drum Tower area in the morning
  2. 2Lunch and a short rest back in Ganzhou District
  3. 3Head west for Zhangye Danxia in the afternoon
  4. 4Stay through sunset if visibility is good, then return to the city
2 days

Balanced Zhangye

Enough time to cover the city's main heritage stop and add one full landscape or temple day without rushing transfers.

  1. 1Day 1: Dafo Temple, Drum Tower, and central Zhangye, then sunset at Danxia if the weather is clear
  2. 2Day 2: Matisi Grottoes or a slower return to Danxia for a different light window
  3. 3Use a private car or arranged driver for the smoother day
3-4 days

Danxia plus Hexi Corridor depth

Use the extra time for both main landscape zones and a slower overland rhythm instead of trying to turn Zhangye itself into a big-city itinerary.

  1. 1Day 1: Ganzhou District, Dafo Temple, Drum Tower, and city food stops
  2. 2Day 2: Linze Danxia Scenic Area with a full set of viewpoints
  3. 3Day 3: Binggou Danxia or Matisi Grottoes depending on whether you want more geology or more temple scenery
  4. 4Day 4: Continue east to Xining or Lanzhou, or west toward Jiayuguan and the rest of the corridor

Best Areas to Explore

Zhangye Drum Tower in the city center

Ganzhou District center

This is the practical urban core for most visitors, with Dafo Temple, the Drum Tower, hotels, simple local restaurants, and the easiest base for short city visits. It is the right area if you are arriving late, staying one night, or want to combine one heritage stop with transport convenience.

Zhangye Danxia and Linze side

The park west of town is the main reason many travelers stop in Zhangye. The most developed and most visited part is the Linze Danxia Scenic Area, where boardwalks and access roads make it relatively easy to cover a major viewpoint circuit in half a day or at sunset.

Matisi and the southern foothills

South of the city, the route toward Matisi shifts the mood from open desert-edge scenery to temple caves and mountain foothills. This is the better second day if you want to balance geology with Buddhist heritage and do not want two similar Danxia sessions back to back.

West station and departure corridor

The southwest side of town is less about sightseeing than about logistics. Zhangye West Railway Station, onward highway access, and many car departures for Danxia make it useful if you are passing through quickly or continuing east-west along the corridor.

Top Sights

Colorful ridges in Zhangye National Geopark

Zhangye National Geopark

The geopark is Zhangye's defining attraction, spread across Linze and Sunan counties in the northern foothills of the Qilian Mountains. The most developed section is the Linze Danxia Scenic Area, where layered sandstone and mineral deposits have been eroded into ridges, pillars, ravines, and the striped slopes most travelers come to photograph.

Build your visit around late afternoon or sunset if possible, and use a car or tour rather than trying to improvise long-distance local transport on the day.

Reclining Buddha inside Dafo Temple in Zhangye

Dafo Temple

This Buddhist temple in central Zhangye dates to the Western Xia period and is best known for its giant reclining Buddha, a clay statue on a wooden frame roughly 35 m long. It gives the city a serious historical anchor, not just a quick stop between scenic drives, and is one of the easiest heritage visits in the Hexi Corridor.

Visit it in the city half of your day, because it combines naturally with the Drum Tower and is much less weather-dependent than Danxia.

Matisi Grottoes

The Matisi area south of Zhangye is the most useful contrast to the open Danxia landscape, combining grotto temples with mountain scenery in the Qilian foothills. It works well for travelers who want one more Silk Road-era religious site without committing to a much longer transfer deeper into Gansu.

Treat this as a driver day or organized excursion, not as a casual add-on after a full Danxia circuit.

Zhangye Drum Tower

The Drum Tower is the most recognizable landmark in the city center and a simple orientation point for short urban walks. It is less important as a long museum-style visit than as a marker of where central Zhangye still feels compact enough for travelers to explore between meals, temple visits, and station transfers.

Use it as your meeting point and reference marker rather than building a full standalone visit around it.

Binggou Danxia Scenic Area

Binggou is the second major scenic section of the geopark system and was developed later than the Linze side. It is a good choice if you have extra time and want more sculpted rock forms, ravines, and a less compressed follow-up landscape day rather than repeating the exact same viewpoint routine.

Add this only on a second landscape day; for a first visit, the Linze side remains the more practical priority.

Getting around

Transport Notes

Arriving by air

Zhangye Ganzhou Airport is about 13 km south of the city and has domestic flights to cities such as Xi'an, Lanzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, and Urumqi. Service is useful but not always daily or year-round, so many travelers find larger airports at Lanzhou or Xining more flexible and then continue by high-speed rail.

Arriving by train

Zhangye West Railway Station is the main high-speed stop, with quoted journey times of about 2 hours from Xining, 3-3.5 hours from Lanzhou, 6.5-7 hours from Xi'an, and 8.5-9.5 hours from Urumqi. Conventional trains use Zhangye Station northeast of the center and are more useful for slower overnight or long-distance routes.

Getting around

Inside the city, buses and taxis cover the basics, but Zhangye is sprawling enough that walking is often slower than it looks on a map. For Danxia, Matisi, and other outer sights, most visitors save time by using a private car, tour vehicle, or an arranged driver from the hotel.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Both DiDi and street taxis are available, and regular taxis can sometimes be cheaper for short hops. Keep hotel names and major sights in Chinese on your phone, especially when heading to stations or scenic areas.

Food

What to Eat

Expect filling northwest staples

Zhangye is more about straightforward, hearty northwest meals than about destination dining. In practice that usually means wheat-heavy dishes such as hand-pulled noodles, beef noodle soups, flatbreads, dumplings, and cold dishes like liangpi or liangfen when the weather is warm.

Use the center for flexible meals

Ganzhou District is the easiest place to eat between sights, especially around the Dafo Temple and Drum Tower side of town. It is better to keep meals close to your route than to cross the city chasing one specific restaurant before or after a Danxia outing.

Plan around day trips

Scenic days outside the city usually work better with an early breakfast, plenty of water, and a proper dinner back in town. If you are going to Danxia or Matisi, treat food as a logistics question first and a discovery question second.
