Planning overview
How to Plan Zhuhai
Zhuhai works best as a low-pressure Pearl River Delta stop: a place for waterfront walks, a Macau pairing, an island day, or a calmer finish after faster cities such as Guangzhou or Shenzhen. It is not a checklist city with dense landmark clusters, so plan by zone and keep travel distances in mind. Most first visits focus on Gongbei or Jida, one coastal evening, and one deeper choice such as Qi'ao Island, Hengqin, or western Doumen.

Best time to visit
Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons for Zhuhai: warm, greener, and more comfortable for long walks along the coast. Summer is hot, humid, and wet, with typhoon risk and less reliable visibility for sea views, while winter is mild and usually workable for city days and Macau pairings.
Stay near Gongbei if you need the railway station or Macau border, and near Jida if you want easier waterfront evenings.
Keep island or ferry plans weather-dependent, especially in summer when heavy rain, haze, or typhoon conditions can disrupt a good day out.
Use Zhuhai railway station as your main anchor: it sits by Gongbei Port and is the practical arrival point for most Guangzhou-side rail trips.
Carry your passport and leave time for border formalities if you plan to pair Zhuhai with Macau or bridge-bound cross-border transport.
The waterfront is the main reason many travelers stop in Zhuhai: it shows the city's slower, more open side.

Best Areas to Explore
Gongbei and Qianshan
This is the most practical base for short stays: border access to Macau, Zhuhai railway station, budget and midrange hotels, late-night streets, and easy onward movement. It is busier and less scenic than the coast, but strongest for logistics and first-night convenience.

Jida, Xianglu Bay, and Lovers' Road
This is the postcard Zhuhai that most visitors want: coastal promenades, the Fisher Girl statue, sea views, and the Grand Theater on nearby Yeli Island. It works best in the late afternoon and evening, when the light softens and the waterfront becomes the day's main activity.

Xiangzhou, Tangjiawan, and the Qi'ao side
North of the core tourist strip, Zhuhai becomes more local, more residential, and less centered on obvious landmarks. This side is useful for Xiangzhou Port departures, a quieter pace, and bridge access toward Qi'ao Island if you want a slower half day outside the city center.

Hengqin and the newer southern side
Hengqin is the newer, more spread-out Zhuhai: broader roads, modern transport links, and infrastructure tied to Macau and the wider Greater Bay Area. Stay here if you specifically need Hengqin Port, rail links toward the airport, or a modern base rather than an older urban neighborhood.

What to see
Top Sights
Zhuhai Fisher Girl and Lovers' Road
Zhuhai's symbolic landmark stands in Xianglu Bay along the city's best-known waterfront promenade. The statue itself is a short stop, but the wider value is the coastal walk around it, which gives first-time visitors the clearest sense of why Zhuhai feels different from denser inland delta cities.
Come late in the day when the heat drops, then continue north or south along the shore instead of treating the statue as a standalone stop.
Zhuhai Grand Theater
On Yeli Island, the city's opera house is one of Zhuhai's most distinctive modern buildings. Its twin shells, inspired by local scallops, make it a better visual landmark than checklist attraction, and it works especially well as part of an evening waterfront circuit.
Even if you do not attend a performance, walk out toward Yeli Island for the exterior view and combine it with dinner nearby.
New Yuan Ming Palace
This park is a partial reconstruction of Beijing's Old Summer Palace and sits conveniently for travelers staying around Gongbei or Qianshan. It is not the reason to come to Zhuhai on its own, but it works as an easy half-day historical-style stop when you want a break from the coast or need something close to the border districts.
Use it as a practical add-on near Gongbei rather than crossing the whole city solely for it.
Qi'ao Island
Connected by bridge rather than ferry, Qi'ao offers a quieter edge-of-city outing with a greener, slower feel than central Zhuhai. It makes sense when you want space, a change of pace, and an island setting without committing to the longer logistics of the outer Wanshan islands.
Go early and treat it as a half-day or full-day outing, not a quick insert between border errands and evening plans.
Jintai Temple
In western Zhuhai's Doumen side, Jintai Temple adds a more excursion-like, less urban layer to the city. It is better for travelers who have already covered the coast and want a scenic temple stop beyond the core waterfront neighborhoods.
This works best with a car or ride-hailing and should be paired with a western Zhuhai day rather than squeezed into a central sightseeing loop.
Getting around
Transport Notes
Arriving by air
Zhuhai Jinwan Airport is the city's main airport and sits about 50 km southwest of the city center. It is mainly useful for domestic flights; most travelers continue into town by airport bus, taxi, or ride-hailing depending on how far west or south they need to go.
Arriving by train
Zhuhai railway station is the key arrival point for most visitors, sitting beside Gongbei Port on the Macau border. It is the southern terminus of the Guangzhou-Zhuhai intercity railway and also connects into the airport-oriented intercity line.
Getting around
Zhuhai is more spread out than it first appears on a map, so buses work but often cost time. For most short visits, walking within one zone and then using taxis or ride-hailing between zones is more realistic than trying to string the whole day together on public transport.
Taxis and ride-hailing
Taxis and ride-hailing are the simplest way to handle airport runs, western Zhuhai, and evening returns from the coast. Save destination names in Chinese, especially for ports, border facilities, and temples outside the core center.
Food
What to Eat
Lean into coastal Cantonese food
Zhuhai is strongest when you treat it as a Cantonese seafood city: steamed fish, shrimp dumplings (har gow), roast goose, claypot rice, oysters, and other shellfish all fit naturally here. It is a better place for fresh, clean flavors than for one signature dish that defines the whole city.
Use neighborhoods that match your route
Gongbei and Lotus Road are practical for casual snacks, late dinners, and border-adjacent meals. Wanzai is known for seafood-focused eating, while Jida and Xiangzhou give you easier mall and hotel dining when you want something simple after a long day outside.
Treat meals as part of the evening plan
A good Zhuhai evening usually means a coastal walk first and dinner second, not the other way around. The city suits seafood dinners, Cantonese tea-house style meals, and flexible late suppers better than destination dining that requires crossing town just for one table.

Easy Trips from Zhuhai
Macau
Zhuhai's easiest add-on: cross via Gongbei or Hengqin depending your route, and treat it as either a same-day excursion or the next stop on your trip.
Guangzhou
A straightforward rail extension from Zhuhai station, commonly around an hour to Guangzhou South, and the most useful big-city pairing if you want more museums, food, and transport options.
Hong Kong
Best handled as a full day or onward move via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge shuttle system rather than as a rushed evening side trip.
